What’s Your Technical Writing Experience?

How many writing courses did you take at college?
How many college courses were delivered by engineers?

Most of us were poorly prepared.
We were expected to become good technical writers by magic!

It’s a skill that needs theory, examples, and practice.

The Three Pillars of Excellence in Technical Writing

Clear

Your writing should be unambiguous and easy to read.

Concise

No one reads technical content for fun, so your writing should be as short as possible.

Concrete

Engineering is about facts – your writing must be specific and with the appropriate degree of detail.

Hello, I’m Peter T. Martin, your instructor

I have a Ph.D. in engineering and am a registered professional engineer. I practiced as a licensed Engineer in the design and construction of Highways and Bridges. I have been a faculty member at Universities in California and Utah. I was Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at New Mexico State University and retired recently.

I’ve written thousands of technical documents: contractual, design specifications, proposals, politician briefs, blogs, expert witness reports, requests for funding documents, and countless reports of every kind. I have published three book chapters, over 60 peer-reviewed journal papers, and 150 professional papers in trade journals and conferences.
